Tenth House

Origin

The Tenth House comes from Hellenistic astrology, where it was called the Midheaven and the place of action, since the Sun reached its highest point at noon at this position. The Greek astrologers classified it among the four angular houses, the most powerful houses of the chart, and assigned it to public reputation, deeds, profession, and the praise or blame of the community. Manilius in his Astronomicon called it the place of fortune in the public sense. The Tenth House was paired with the Fourth across the chart, the Fourth being the private root and the Tenth being the public flower, the visible offering of the life lived.

In medieval European astrology the Tenth House was called the House of Honour and the House of the King, used to indicate the profession, the relationship with authority, the standing in the community, and the mother in some traditions. William Lilly used it for questions about kings, judges, employers, and the success of any public enterprise. With the rise of psychological astrology in the twentieth century, the Tenth House was read as the territory of vocation in the deep sense, the work that the soul has come to do in the world, and the shape of the public self that grows from this calling.
