Ascendant

Origin

The Ascendant comes from Hellenistic astrology and was called Horoskopos in Greek, meaning the hour marker, since it indicated the precise moment of birth by the rotation of the eastern horizon through the zodiac. From this single point of the chart derives the entire modern English word horoscope, which originally referred only to the rising degree, not to the whole picture. The Greek astrologers, building on Babylonian observations and Egyptian decanal lore, made the Ascendant the foundation of the chart, the first thing to be calculated and the first thing to be interpreted. Vettius Valens in the second century of the common era gave the Ascendant primary importance for the body, the temperament, and the basic life direction.

Through the Arab transmission of Hellenistic astrology and its return to Europe in the twelfth century, the Ascendant retained its central place. Medieval astrologers called the Ascendant the index of life and used the degree to calculate the technique called primary directions for predicting the timing of major events. Renaissance astrologers Marsilio Ficino and William Lilly preserved the teaching. With the rise of psychological astrology in the twentieth century, the Ascendant came to be read also as the persona, the way the soul has chosen to present itself in this life, and the costume worn for the unique role of the present incarnation. Meaning and function

The Ascendant describes how you arrive. The sign on the Ascendant colours your physical appearance, your characteristic gestures, the rhythm of your speech, your manner of crossing thresholds, and the energy others feel in your presence before you have spoken. Aries rising tends to be direct, athletic, with a quick step and often a prominent forehead; Taurus rising is grounded, with steady eyes, a sensual presence, and a melodic voice; Gemini rising is mobile, expressive, with hands that speak; Cancer rising is soft, often with a round face, with a protective bearing; Leo rising is radiant, often with prominent hair, with a regal carriage; Virgo rising is precise, with refined features, with a quiet attentive manner.

Each rising sign continues the pattern: Libra rising is graceful, with balanced features; Scorpio rising is intense, with penetrating eyes; Sagittarius rising is open, often tall, with an expansive manner; Capricorn rising is reserved, with classical bones, with a slow growing presence; Aquarius rising is unusual, with electric energy; Pisces rising is dreamy, with soft eyes, with a fluid presence. In practice

The Ascendant requires an exact birth time to calculate, since it changes by approximately one degree every four minutes. A birth time recorded as eight in the morning when the actual time was eight twenty produces a chart with an Ascendant five degrees off, and possibly the wrong sign at the cusp of every house. The Ascendant is the eastern horizon, the place of dawn, the daily rising of the Sun. It carries the symbolic weight of every birth as a small sunrise, every appearance as a small incarnation. Across traditions, the rising point has been seen as a sacred threshold: the moment when the soul, choosing a particular life, crosses from the inner world into the outer. In Vedic astrology the Ascendant is called Lagna and is considered the most important point in the chart, the foundation on which all other interpretations rest. Vedic charts are drawn with the Lagna at the top or left of the wheel and emphasise the rising sign far more than the Sun sign. In esoteric astrology the Ascendant is said to indicate the soul purpose for the present incarnation, while the Sun indicates the personality being developed.
