Origin

The Ninth House comes from Hellenistic astrology, where it was called the place of God and assigned to long journeys, foreign affairs, religion, prophecy, and the wisdom traditions. The Greek astrologers classified it among the cadent houses and considered it a fortunate place because it was sacred to the gods, particularly to Apollo and to the Muses. Vettius Valens described it as the place of foreign travel, dreams, and divine matters. Manilius in his Astronomicon gave it the figure of the divine spirit. The Ninth House was paired with the Third across the chart, the Third being the close mind and the Ninth being the far mind that reaches beyond the immediate village.

In medieval European astrology the Ninth House was called the House of Pilgrimage, of Religion, and of Higher Learning, used to indicate long journeys, religious life, university study, and the prophecies and dreams of the night.
