Origin

The use of number to assess the compatibility of two souls is ancient. Pythagorean philosophy (Pythagoras of Samos, around 570 BCE) treated certain numerical ratios as harmonious (the octave 2:1, the fifth 3:2, the fourth 4:3) and others as dissonant, and the Pythagoreans applied these ratios to the relations between people as well as between musical notes. In Hindu Vedic astrology, the compatibility of two people is calculated through the ashtakoota system, a detailed match of natal nakshatras involving numerical scoring, used for thousands of years to assess prospective marriages.

In modern Western numerology, compatibility analysis was systematised by the American school in the early twentieth century. L. Dow Balliett (1900-1929) gave guidance on which numbers harmonise with which, and Juno Jordan (from 1925) and Florence Campbell (1931) developed detailed compatibility tables. Meaning and method

The basic compatibility calculation takes the Life Path Numbers of two people and assesses their relationship. The classical reading groups the digits into compatibility families. The "mind" family (1, 5, 7) shares intellectual curiosity. The "creative" family (3, 6, 9) shares artistic and emotional expression. The "business" family (2, 4, 8) shares practical and structural concerns.
