Heart Number
The Heart Number, often called the Soul Urge Number, is calculated from the vowels of your full birth name and reveals your deepest inner longing, your true motivation, and what your soul wants in the silence below all social presentation. It is the inner counterpart of the outward Personality Number and one of the four core figures in any complete numerological chart.
Origin
The Heart Number rests on the ancient mystical conviction that vowels carry the breath of life, the spirit-sound, while consonants carry the body and structure. Hebrew Gematria, from around the sixth century BCE, already distinguished the unpronounced vowels of the sacred Tetragrammaton from its consonantal frame, treating the vowels as the divine breath that animates the form. Pythagoras around 570 BCE made each letter numerically alive, and his school taught that the soul resonated in the vowels of one's name. From this current the Heart Number eventually emerged as a distinct numerological figure.
In its modern form the Heart Number was formalised by the American school of numerology in the early twentieth century. L. Dow Balliett (writing from 1900) and Juno Jordan (from 1925) named the vowel-sum the Soul Urge Number, the deepest motivation of the self. Florence Campbell's Your Days Are Numbered (1931) gave the calculation its popular shape, and writers including Hans Decoz, Matthew Goodwin, and Dan Millman have refined the interpretive vocabulary. The German term Herzenszahl and the French nombre du coeur translate the idea of the soul's number into the language of the heart, the seat of inner truth.
Meaning and calculation
The Heart Number is calculated by assigning Pythagorean values to the vowels of your full birth name. The Pythagorean table is A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3, and Y when it sounds as a vowel (as in "Yvonne" or "Mary") also receives Y=7. Sum these values for every vowel in your full name as it appears on your birth certificate, then reduce to a single digit or to a Master Number (11, 22, 33). The result is your Heart Number.
Each value names a deep wish. Heart 1 longs to be independent, to lead, to stand alone. Heart 2 longs for partnership, peace, gentle connection. Heart 3 longs to express, to create, to delight and be delighted. Heart 4 longs for stability, mastery, a structured and reliable life. Heart 5 longs for freedom, novelty, sensation, the open road. Calculate for "Anna Rivera". The vowels are A, A, I, E, A. Values: A=1, A=1, I=9, E=5, A=1. Sum: 1+1+9+5+1=17, 1+7=8.
