Eleventh House
The Eleventh House is the eleventh of the twelve astrological houses and governs friends, communities, networks, alliances, hopes, ideals, and the visions you carry for the future. Of an Aquarius nature, ruled by Aquarius and modern Uranus with traditional Saturn rulership, it is the house of the chosen family, the affinity group, the cause, and the larger collective movement to which the individual belongs. It is where the public self of the Tenth House finds its companions and dreams its larger dreams.
Origin
The Eleventh House comes from Hellenistic astrology, where it was called the place of Good Spirit and assigned to friends, allies, hopes, and the favours received from those in power. The Greek astrologers classified it among the succedent houses and considered it one of the most fortunate houses of the chart, since it was sacred to the agathos daimon, the good spirit who brings benefits to the native. Vettius Valens described it as the place of friends, hopes, and rewards from kings. The Eleventh House was paired with the Fifth across the chart, the Fifth being the personal creativity and the Eleventh being the collective creativity that emerges in groups.
In medieval European astrology the Eleventh House was called the House of Friends and the House of Hopes, used to indicate friends, allies, the favour of patrons, and the wishes of the heart. William Lilly used it for questions about whether a hope would be fulfilled, the loyalty of a friend, and the success of an alliance. With the rise of psychological astrology in the twentieth century, the Eleventh House was read as the territory of the chosen community, the tribe of affinity rather than blood, and the larger social vision toward which the soul is moving. Dane Rudhyar wrote on the Eleventh House as the house of the future self glimpsed through community.
Meaning and function
The Eleventh House describes how you find your tribe. It is the house of friends, of the chosen community, of the social or political movement to which you belong, of the professional network that supports your work. It is also the house of hopes, the visions you carry for your own future and for the world. The sign on the Eleventh House cusp colours your relationship with community: Aries on the Eleventh seeks pioneering allies; Taurus on the Eleventh seeks loyal earthy friends; Gemini on the Eleventh seeks lively varied networks; Aquarius on the Eleventh, at home, seeks innovative chosen family; Pisces on the Eleventh seeks soulful spiritual community.
Planets in the Eleventh House mark your relationship with friends, communities, and visions of the future. Sun here gives a vitality found through chosen community and group identity; the Moon in the Eleventh gives emotional life shaped by friends and groups; Venus in the Eleventh gives ease in friendship and many social connections; Jupiter in the Eleventh gives expansive networks and beneficial alliances; Uranus in the Eleventh, the natural ruler at home, gives unconventional friendships and a strong identification with cause and movement. The function of the Eleventh House is to lift the I beyond the personal into the collective, to give the soul a tribe, and to align the individual life with a larger vision shared with others.
In practice
In your natal chart, the Eleventh House cusp tells you the texture of your social life and your visions for the future. Its ruler by placement shows where your social energy actually lives. A heavily occupied Eleventh House indicates a life shaped by community, friendship, group projects, or political and visionary movements. An empty Eleventh House does not mean a friendless life but means the territory is shaped by the sign on the cusp and the placement of its ruler. The Eleventh House is also where you receive the rewards of your Tenth House work, the benefits that come back from the contribution you have made.
Common configurations include Uranus in the Eleventh, the natural ruler at home, often a person involved in innovation, technology, or social change; Jupiter in the Eleventh, expansive networks and good fortune through groups; the Sun in the Eleventh, identity built around chosen community; Saturn in the Eleventh, serious work with groups and sometimes loneliness in friendship; Pluto in the Eleventh, transformative experiences through community and political movements. Transits to the Eleventh House are often felt as periods when friendships intensify, communities form or dissolve, or visions of the future come into focus. To work with your Eleventh House, identify the tribe of affinity to which you truly belong, the cause that calls you, and the vision you carry, and place yourself in the company of those who share it.
Symbolic depth
The Eleventh House is the house of the council, the circle, the gathering of the chosen ones who share a vision. Its symbol is the round table, the assembly, the fire around which the tribe of affinity gathers. In the tarot, the Eleventh House resonates with The Star, card seventeen, the figure of vision and hope, pouring inspiration onto land and water under the wide sky, and with Three of Pentacles, the figure of collaborative skilled work in community.
In Vedic astrology the equivalent house is called Labha Bhava, the house of gains, read for income from work, friends, and the fulfilment of desires. In esoteric astrology the Eleventh House holds the soul vision, the future self glimpsed through community and aligned with a larger collective movement. The Eleventh House asks you to find the people who share your vision, to recognise that you cannot create alone what can only be created together, and to commit to the slow building of community that turns hopes into shared reality.
