Leo

Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac, covering the solar period from 23 July to 22 August, the height of summer in the northern hemisphere. Its glyph traces the lion's mane and curling tail, its element is Fire, its modality is fixed, and its ruling celestial body is the Sun. Leo embodies self-expression, creative radiance, and sovereign generosity, and stands opposite Aquarius on the wheel.

Origin and myth

The lion was a sacred animal across the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean, associated with solar kings and goddesses of war alike. The Babylonian constellation UR.GU.LA, the Great Lion, was already mapped in the third millennium BCE, and the Greeks renamed it Leon. The royal star Regulus, alpha Leonis, sits at the heart of the constellation and was considered one of the four watchers of the heavens in Persian astronomy, marking the summer quarter. In the Hellenistic synthesis of the 2nd century BCE, Leo was assigned to the fifth sign of the tropical zodiac and given to the Sun, the most powerful planet, in keeping with its royal nature.

In Greek myth, Leo is the Nemean Lion, the invulnerable beast slain by Heracles as the first of his twelve labours. Its golden hide could not be pierced by any weapon, so the hero strangled it with his bare hands and afterwards wore the skin as armour. Zeus placed the lion among the stars as an honour to the conquest. The myth carries Leo's themes: the lion is a power that cannot be subdued from outside but only embraced and worn. Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Hindu traditions all share lion-headed deities and lion-thrones, marking Leo as the universal sign of solar kingship and the fierce protective face of the divine.

Traits and shadow

Leo energy is warm, generous, dramatic, and creative. With the Sun as ruler, the sign is built to shine: to express, to create, to play, and to lead from the heart. You are likely to feel most alive when you are making something that bears your signature, when you are loved, and when you can be generous with what you have. The fixed fire modality means Leo sustains creative passion over time rather than initiating it briefly. Performers, leaders, parents who love being parents, teachers who love teaching, and craftspeople proud of their work are classical Leo archetypes.

The shadow of Leo is pride, the need for constant admiration, and the wound of feeling unseen that drives outsized self-promotion. Unintegrated Leo can confuse the throne for the self and become tyrannical when its light is not reflected back. The lion also carries a tender heart that is easily hurt by indifference. Healing for Leo comes through the collective vision of opposite Aquarius, the humility of Virgo, and the discovery that creative joy does not depend on applause. Children, animals, and creative practice are reliable medicines for Leo.

In practice

In your natal chart, the house containing Leo shows where you must shine, create, and be seen. Leo on the Ascendant gives a strong presence, often with a notable head of hair, and a warm laugh. Leo on the fifth house cusp doubles the natural creative theme of romance, children, and play. The Sun in Leo describes an identity built on creative self-expression; the Moon in Leo describes emotional security tied to being appreciated. Venus in Leo loves grandly and theatrically; Mars in Leo acts with showmanship and the courage of the heart.

In synastry, Leo is classically compatible with the other fire signs Aries and Sagittarius, and with the air signs Gemini and Libra, which feed its flame. Squares from Taurus or Scorpio bring confrontations with value and depth. To work with Leo energy, write or perform something at the new moon in Leo, dress with deliberate joy, or use the daily horoscope as a daily prompt to find the day's solar gesture.

Symbolic depth

In alchemy, Leo is associated with the green lion devouring the sun, an image of base matter that transmutes the solar gold into a higher form. In the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the sign is assigned to the path of Teth, Strength in the tarot, which is Leo's major arcana correspondence in the Golden Dawn system. Strength shows a woman gently closing the lion's jaws with her bare hands, an image of inner sovereignty that does not need to dominate. The minor arcana decanate cards 5, 6 and 7 of Wands fall in Leo, charting the stages of conflict, victory, and defended ground.

Jung read Leo as the archetype of the divine child and the king, the self that radiates without apology. The lion is the heart of the body in many esoteric anatomies, and the heart chakra is the seat of the Leo principle. In medieval bestiaries the lion was said to sleep with its eyes open, an image of the watchful sovereign. To work with Leo is to learn that creative joy is not vanity but a sacred offering, and that the sun gives without diminishing. Continue through the glossary to follow the wheel of signs.
