Leo

Origin and myth

The lion was a sacred animal across the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean, associated with solar kings and goddesses of war alike. The Babylonian constellation UR.GU.LA, the Great Lion, was already mapped in the third millennium BCE, and the Greeks renamed it Leon. The royal star Regulus, alpha Leonis, sits at the heart of the constellation and was considered one of the four watchers of the heavens in Persian astronomy, marking the summer quarter. In the Hellenistic synthesis of the 2nd century BCE, Leo was assigned to the fifth sign of the tropical zodiac and given to the Sun, the most powerful planet, in keeping with its royal nature.

In Greek myth, Leo is the Nemean Lion, the invulnerable beast slain by Heracles as the first of his twelve labours. Its golden hide could not be pierced by any weapon, so the hero strangled it with his bare hands and afterwards wore the skin as armour. Zeus placed the lion among the stars as an honour to the conquest. The myth carries Leo's themes: the lion is a power that cannot be subdued from outside but only embraced and worn. Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Hindu traditions all share lion-headed deities and lion-thrones, marking Leo as the universal sign of solar kingship and the fierce protective face of the divine.
